TMJ and Jaw Pain in Boca Raton: How the Neck and Jaw Are Connected

Jaw clicking, tightness, and pain near the ear are common complaints. The jaw joint, called the temporomandibular joint or TMJ, sits close to the upper neck, and the muscles of both areas work together. For that reason, some people with jaw pain also look at neck posture and upper cervical alignment.
Signs people commonly report
• Jaw pain or fatigue when chewing.
• Clicking or a feeling of locking.
• Earaches without an infection.
• Headaches around the temples.
• Neck and shoulder tension on the same side as the jaw.
Possible contributors
Teeth grinding, stress, dental bite changes, past injuries, whiplash, and forward head posture can each play a role. Your dentist or oral surgeon should be part of your care team, especially for bite and joint issues.
What an ultra specific exam may add
Dr. Hasson evaluates posture, neck motion, and, when appropriate, uses imaging to measure the position of the atlas and axis. If a correction is indicated, it is gentle and precise. Some patients report less tension through the neck and jaw after care, but results vary and no result is guaranteed.
Habits that may help
• Rest your tongue on the roof of your mouth with teeth slightly apart.
• Avoid gum and very hard or chewy foods during flare-ups.
• Use a warm compress for tight muscles.
• Manage stress with breathing or short walks.
When to see a doctor or dentist quickly
Seek prompt care if your jaw locks open or closed, if you have swelling or fever, or if pain follows a facial injury.
