Upper Cervical vs Regular Chiropractor: What Is the Difference?

Both kinds of chiropractors study the spine, and many techniques overlap. The differences are mostly in focus and in how the adjustment is delivered. This is a general comparison, and individual practices vary.
Focus
Upper cervical care concentrates on the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), the top two bones of the neck, which sit close to the base of the skull. General chiropractic often addresses the whole spine and other joints.
Measurement
Upper cervical practices usually rely on a detailed exam and, when appropriate, precise imaging to measure position before adjusting.
The adjustment
An upper cervical adjustment is typically light and specific. We do not twist or crack the neck. Many people who dislike the popping of a traditional adjustment prefer this approach.
Is one better?
Neither is better for everyone. The right fit depends on your concerns, comfort and goals. Care may help some people, and results vary.
Is upper cervical care painful? It is designed to be gentle and low-force.
Do you twist the neck? No.
Can children be seen? Yes. See our Kids Chiropractic page.
