Sciatica Chiropractor in Boca Raton, FL 33432: Gentle, Specific Care for Leg and Low Back Pain

Sciatica Relief in Boca Raton: A Plain-Language Guide

If a sharp, burning or electric pain runs from your low back or buttock down your leg, you may be dealing with sciatica. Many people in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Boynton Beach, Deerfield Beach and Coral Springs search for answers when leg pain starts to affect sleep, work, driving, golf or time with family. This guide explains what sciatica is, what can cause it, which warning signs need medical care first, and how Dr. Evan Hasson at Specific Chiropractic approaches it with careful, specific, gentle care.

This page is general health information. It is not a diagnosis or medical advice for your situation, and individual results vary.

Quick Answers About Sciatica

Sciatica is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It describes pain that follows the path of the sciatic nerve, usually from the low back through the buttock and down the back of one leg.

It often affects one side of the body. Many people describe it as sharp, burning, electric or like a deep ache, sometimes with tingling or numbness in the leg or foot.

Many cases improve over several weeks, but pain that is severe, getting worse or paired with weakness needs prompt medical evaluation.

Dr. Hasson is ultra specific when adjusting the spine and begins with a careful history and examination, so the plan fits the person and not a template.

Specific Chiropractic is at 1 W Camino Real #111, Boca Raton, FL 33432. Call 561-571-2468 or book online at calendly.com/adjustme.

What Is Sciatica?

The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It is formed by nerve roots that leave the lower spine and joins into a thick cord that travels through the buttock and down each leg. When one of those nerve roots, or the nerve itself, is irritated or compressed, the result can be pain, tingling, numbness or weakness along that path.

Doctors often use the term lumbar radiculopathy for nerve root irritation in the low back. In everyday conversation, most people simply call it sciatica.

Common Sciatica Symptoms

Symptoms vary from person to person. People commonly describe pain that starts in the low back or buttock and travels down the back or side of the leg. It may be worse when sitting, coughing, sneezing or bending forward. Some people feel pins and needles, numbness in the foot, a heavy or weak leg, or difficulty standing from a chair.

Pain that is only in the low back, without leg symptoms, is not usually called sciatica. Pain that crosses both legs, or that comes with changes in bladder or bowel control, is different and needs urgent care.

When Leg Pain Is an Emergency

Chiropractic care is not the right first step for every case. Go to an emergency room or call 911 if you have any of the following: loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, sudden severe weakness in a leg or foot, leg pain after a major fall or accident with significant trauma, fever together with back pain, unexplained weight loss together with back pain, or a history of cancer with new back pain.

If your symptoms are mild or moderate and none of those warning signs apply, a careful evaluation can be a sensible next step. If we see anything concerning, we will tell you plainly and refer you to the right provider.

What Can Cause Sciatica?

Several different problems can irritate the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that form it. Common causes include a bulging or herniated disc, narrowing of the spinal canal or the openings where nerves exit (spinal stenosis), muscle tension or spasm deep in the buttock, a joint problem in the low back or pelvis, bone spurs related to age, and injury from a fall, sports activity or car accident.

Because several of these look similar from the outside, the cause matters. The right plan for a disc problem may differ from the right plan for a joint or muscle problem. This is why we focus on a clear examination first.

Why Sciatica Can Be Confusing

Pain in the buttock or leg does not always come from the sciatic nerve. Hip joint problems, sacroiliac joint irritation and muscle trigger points can feel very similar. Sometimes the nerve is being irritated higher up in the spine. Sometimes posture, sitting habits or the way the pelvis and low back share load are part of the story.

This is one reason people can feel stuck. They may stretch the leg again and again while the real source is somewhere else. A structured evaluation helps sort out what is likely contributing.

How Dr. Hasson Evaluates Sciatica

Your first visit begins with a conversation. We ask when the pain started, what makes it better or worse, whether you have numbness or weakness, and whether there was an injury, a long drive or a change in activity. We also ask about your health history and what you do for work and exercise.

Then comes a physical examination. This can include posture and gait observation, spinal and pelvic movement checks, palpation, neurological screening of strength, sensation and reflexes, and orthopedic tests. We use digital X-ray in the office when it is appropriate to see the structure of your spine and plan your care. If you need an MRI or care from a medical specialist, we will say so and help coordinate.

Gentle, Specific Care at Specific Chiropractic

Dr. Hasson is a Palmer College of Chiropractic graduate with more than 10 years in practice and is known for being ultra specific when adjusting the spine. His focus is upper cervical chiropractic, and he is trained in several techniques, including NUCCA, Grostic, Atlas Orthogonal, Advanced Orthogonal, Knee Chest and Palmer Toggle Recoil. You can read about each on our Chiropractic Techniques page.

Many people wonder why an upper cervical chiropractor would see leg pain. The spine works as one connected system. Dr. Hasson looks at how the whole spine and pelvis are carrying you, not only the area that hurts. Care is gentle and specific, and the plan is reviewed as you progress. We do not promise cures or outcomes, and chiropractic care is not a substitute for medical treatment of conditions that need a medical doctor.

What You Can Do at Home

Follow any instructions from your own doctors first. In general, many people do better with gentle movement than with total bed rest. Short walks, changing positions often and avoiding long stretches of sitting can help. Avoid heavy lifting and deep forward bending while your symptoms are flared up. Use heat or cold in ways that feel comfortable. Sleep on your side with a pillow between your knees, or on your back with a pillow under your knees.

If you sit for work, stand up every 30 minutes, keep your feet flat and place a small support behind your low back. If you drive often around Boca Raton, adjust your seat so your knees are slightly below your hips.

How Long Does Sciatica Last?

It depends on the cause, your health and how long it has been present. Some people notice improvement within a few weeks, while others take longer. Pain that lasts more than a few weeks, keeps returning, or is getting worse should be evaluated. We will not give you a fixed number of visits on day one and hold you to it. A good plan is reviewed regularly and changed as you improve.

Sciatica After a Car Accident or Sports Injury

Sciatica can start after a rear-end crash, a fall, a golf swing, a running injury or lifting something heavy. If your pain began after a car accident, see our Car Accident Care page for Florida PIP information, the 14-day rule and what to do after a crash. If it began during sports or training, tell us about your activity so the plan can fit your routine.

Frequently Asked Questions About Sciatica

What is the fastest way to know what is causing my leg pain? A careful history and examination is the best starting point. We will tell you if you need imaging or a medical evaluation.

Is chiropractic care safe for sciatica? Many people with sciatica receive chiropractic care. Every treatment has risks and benefits, and we screen for warning signs before care and refer out when needed.

Do I need an X-ray? Not always. We use digital X-ray in our office when it is appropriate for your situation and explain why.

Should I rest or stay active? Most people do better staying gently active than resting in bed. Follow any instructions from your doctor.

Can sitting make sciatica worse? Yes, for many people. Long stretches of sitting can increase pressure on the low back. Break up sitting time and change positions often.

Does your office accept insurance? Our office is cash-based, and we also take car insurance for accident injuries. We provide a detailed receipt you can submit for reimbursement. Call 561-571-2468 and we will explain what to expect before your visit.

Can you promise results? No. Individual results vary, and we never guarantee outcomes. We promise a careful exam, clear explanations and a plan that fits you.
