Sciatica Treatment Options in Boca Raton: Understanding Leg Pain and Nerve Irritation

Sciatica is pain that travels from the lower back or buttock down the leg, often with numbness or tingling. It results from irritation of the sciatic nerve or the nerve roots that form it, and it can be sharp, burning or electric in quality.

What is happening in the body

The sciatic nerve is formed by nerve roots L4 to S3 and runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the leg. Common causes include a herniated disc pressing on a root, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and piriformis syndrome where a tight buttock muscle irritates the nerve. Inflammation from leaked disc material can irritate the root even without major compression. Most cases improve within six to twelve weeks.

How it connects to the nervous system and brain

Nerve roots carry sensory and motor signals between the spinal cord and the leg. When a root is irritated, the brain receives abnormal signals experienced as pain, tingling or numbness in the area it supplies, and weakness may occur. Prolonged nerve irritation can sensitize pain pathways in the spinal cord and brain. Upper neck function influences posture and muscle tone through the whole spine, which may affect load on the lumbar region.

The medical approach: medication and surgery

Care begins with staying active, short courses of anti-inflammatory medicines and sometimes oral steroids or nerve pain medicines such as gabapentin. Epidural steroid injections may reduce nerve inflammation. Surgery such as microdiscectomy or laminectomy is considered for severe or progressive weakness, cauda equina symptoms, or pain that does not improve after six to twelve weeks of conservative care.

The physical therapy approach

Therapists use directional preference exercises, nerve mobilization, core and hip strengthening, and graded activity. Positions and movements that reduce leg symptoms are identified, and patients learn safer bending and lifting. Therapy is often the first-line option because many cases improve with guided movement.

The acupuncture approach

Some trials suggest acupuncture may reduce sciatica pain and improve function, with studies of varying quality. It is generally safe and can be used alongside other care.

General dietary approach

An anti-inflammatory diet with vegetables, fruit, fish, nuts, olive oil and whole grains supports healing. Maintaining a healthy weight lowers pressure on lumbar discs, and staying hydrated helps disc health. Quitting smoking improves disc nutrition and recovery.

The Specific Chiropractic approach

Dr. Hasson focuses on the atlas and axis, aiming to restore balanced nervous system input and reduce compensating strain down the spine, which may lessen the load on lumbar discs and nerves. The adjustment is gentle and ultra-specific. Patients with progressive weakness or red flag symptoms are referred for urgent medical evaluation.

When to seek care

Seek emergency care for new leg weakness, foot drop, numbness in the saddle area, or loss of bladder or bowel control. Also see a doctor if pain is severe, worsening or lasts beyond several weeks.
