If you lift weights, run, play tennis or pickleball, golf, swim or compete in team sports, aches tend to show up in the same few places. This guide covers the problems active people search for most, what may be going on, and when an upper cervical exam at Specific Chiropractic in Boca Raton might be worth considering. It is general information, not a diagnosis.

Neck pain and stiffness after training

Heavy squats, overhead presses, deadlifts and long cardio sessions can leave the neck tight, especially when form fades late in a set. Looking up or down for long periods, such as when cycling or swimming, can add to it. Dr. Evan Hasson looks at the atlas (C1) and axis (C2), the top two bones of the neck, and measures whether a misalignment may be part of the picture.

Headaches during or after lifting

Headaches that start at the base of the skull after hard sets, holding your breath under load, or long rides may be linked to neck tension. New, sudden or severe headaches, or a headache with vision changes, weakness or confusion, need a medical evaluation first.

Shoulder pain and rotator cuff strain

Bench press, overhead work, swimming, tennis serves and throwing sports load the shoulder. Pain that travels from the neck into the shoulder or arm can have several sources, so we start with a full exam and refer out when another provider is a better fit.

Low back pain and tightness

Deadlifts, squats, rowing and running can irritate the low back. Some people notice that one hip or leg feels different from the other. We look at posture and the whole spine, including the top of the neck, which may influence how the body balances.

Sciatica-type leg pain

Pain, tingling or numbness down a leg can come from several causes. Weakness, numbness in the groin or loss of bladder or bowel control need emergency care. See our sciatica page for more.

Hip, knee and runner's aches

Uneven stride, tight hips and a leg that feels shorter on one side are common stories from runners and court-sport players. We do not treat every joint, but we can tell you whether a spinal exam makes sense.

Tennis, pickleball and golf

Repeated rotation and a fixed head position during swings can build tension in the neck and upper back. Many local players come in for stiffness that limits their turn.

Wrist, elbow and hand tingling

Tingling in the arms or hands can come from the neck, the shoulder, the elbow or the wrist. A neck exam helps rule one source in or out.

Concussion and collision sports

After a head or neck impact, symptoms like dizziness, vision changes, nausea, confusion or worsening headache need prompt medical evaluation. Upper cervical care should come only after a medical provider has cleared you.

Recovery habits that help any lifter

Warm up before heavy work, keep your neck neutral under load, vary your training, sleep enough, and stop if sharp or radiating pain appears. These habits are general fitness advice and do not replace guidance from your coach, trainer or doctor.

What to expect at your visit

Your first visit includes a conversation about training and injury history, a physical and neurological exam and, when appropriate, upper neck imaging. If a correction is indicated, it is gentle and ultra specific, with no twisting. Care may help some people, and results vary. We do not replace your coach, trainer, physical therapist or doctor.

Hours

Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8 AM to 7 PM, Friday 8 AM to 2 PM. Closed Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

Can I keep training while under care? Often yes, but follow your provider's guidance and listen to your body.

Will upper cervical care improve my lifts? We cannot promise performance changes. Care may help some people feel better, and results vary.
