Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the classic full-body relaxation massage, using long gliding strokes, kneading, tapping and gentle friction, usually with oil or lotion and with you draped for comfort.

A short history: Swedish massage is often credited to Per Henrik Ling, a 19th-century Swedish gymnast who developed a system of movement and manual techniques. The French-named strokes still taught today (effleurage, petrissage and tapotement) were organized by the Dutch practitioner Johann Georg Mezger, and the method spread to the United States in the mid-1800s. It remains the foundation of most modern Western massage.

What it does in the body: slow, rhythmic pressure stimulates the skin and muscle receptors, which can shift the nervous system toward its rest-and-digest state. Research suggests this may lower perceived stress and anxiety, ease muscle tension, and temporarily increase local blood flow. Many people notice better sleep and a calmer mood afterward.

Often chosen for: general relaxation, everyday stress, mild stiffness, and as a gentle first massage.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage uses slow, firm pressure and deep strokes to reach the deeper layers of muscle and the connective tissue (fascia), targeting chronic tension, stiffness and knots (adhesions).

A short history: the term is modern and grew out of Swedish techniques during the 20th century. Cross-fiber friction work described by orthopedic physician James Cyriax and the fascia-focused work of Ida Rolf both shaped how therapists apply sustained, focused pressure today.

What it does in the body: sustained pressure and slow strokes warm tissue, can reduce muscle guarding and may help restore range of motion. Studies on massage for persistent low back and neck discomfort show short-term relief for many people. Some soreness for a day or so afterward is normal, and you are always in control of pressure.

Often chosen for: tight shoulders and neck, desk-related tension, chronic muscle tightness and limited flexibility.

Sports Massage

Sports massage applies targeted techniques to the muscles used in your sport or activity, to support performance, recovery and injury prevention, before, between or after training and events.

A short history: athletes have used massage since the ancient Greek and Roman games, where trainers rubbed athletes with oils before and after competition. Modern sports massage developed through the 20th century and drew wide attention in the 1970s, as national teams began bringing massage therapists to major competitions. It is now a standard part of many athletic recovery programs.

What it does in the body: focused work can increase circulation to worked muscles, reduce muscle tension and perceived soreness after hard exercise, and improve short-term flexibility. It is not a substitute for rest, strength work or medical care of a real injury.

Often chosen for: runners, golfers, tennis and pickleball players, gym-goers and weekend athletes around Boca Raton and Delray Beach.

Lymphatic Massage

Lymphatic massage, also called manual lymph drainage, uses very light, slow, rhythmic strokes and gentle stretching of the skin to encourage the movement of lymph fluid toward the lymph nodes.

A short history: the method was developed in the 1930s by Danish therapist Emil Vodder and his wife Estrid while working in Cannes, France, and was first presented in Paris in 1936. It later became a core part of decongestive therapy used for swelling.

What it does in the body: the lymphatic system has no pump of its own and relies on muscle movement and breathing. Light skin stretch is thought to help move fluid along, which may reduce mild swelling and the heavy feeling that follows travel, injury or surgery, and promote deep relaxation. If you have lymphedema, heart or kidney conditions, or a possible blood clot, please get your doctor’s approval first.

Often chosen for: mild swelling, post-travel puffiness, recovery support and a very gentle, calming session.

Prenatal Massage

Prenatal massage is adapted for pregnancy, using gentle Swedish-style techniques with comfortable, pregnancy-safe positioning, usually side-lying with supportive pillows, and avoiding deep pressure in sensitive areas. We ask for your doctor’s approval first.

A short history: touch and massage to support women through pregnancy appear in many traditional cultures. Formal prenatal massage training developed in the late 20th century as therapists learned how pregnancy changes posture, circulation and joints.

What it does in the body: as the body’s center of gravity shifts, the low back, hips and legs often work harder. Gentle massage may ease muscle tension and leg and low back discomfort, support relaxation and help with sleep. Research on massage during pregnancy is promising for comfort and stress, though more is needed.

Often chosen for: second- and third-trimester back, hip and leg discomfort and stress relief.

Massage Questions

How do I choose a massage? Swedish is a good start for relaxation. Choose deep tissue for chronic tightness, sports massage for training and recovery, lymphatic for gentle fluid support, and prenatal if you are pregnant. Your therapist can adjust as you go.

Will it hurt? Massage should never be painful. Tell your therapist right away if pressure is too much and it will be adjusted.

Who should check with a doctor first? Anyone who is pregnant, has a blood clotting condition, a fever, an infection, a recent injury or surgery, or a serious medical condition.

How do I book an appointment? Appointments are made by phone or text only: call or text 561-571-2468. New massage client special starting at $79 for your first hour massage to experience it. Hours: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 8 AM to 7 PM, Friday 8 AM to 2 PM.
